Transcription: Waiting for them were the foot soldiers of the Second Corps of the Union, veterans themselves and determined to hold fast at any cost. The Confederates were met with deadly rifle fire, but in a last heroic effort succeeded in reaching the enemy lines, driving back two Unionist regiments in the center. The tide of battle seemed to be turning decidedly in favor of the Confederation until Meade hurled a brigade from Pennsylvania into the breach. This desperate attack drove back the Southerners in disorder.
